Lake Te Anau & Glow Worm Caves

The next stop was Te Anau. It’s a great overnight stop when on the way to Milford Sound and Fjordland National Park.  There are also some great restaurants here for a feed!

We just had one night here, after arriving around mid-afternoon, we spent the evening going to see the glow worms.  This involved doing a beautiful sunset cruise on Lake Te Anau, which took us to the caves where the glow-worm experience was.  Once there we had a little talk explaining to us more about what glow worms were, what they do and why they were there.  We then went into the cave, the further you went in the darker it got.  There was a waterfall inside the cave and I really enjoyed the walk in the cave, there were some lower parts where we needed to crouch down to get through.  At the end of the cave we boarded a small boat, all torches/lights were switched off and we were in complete darkness.  When you looked up you could see the glow-worms on the top of the cave, just like looking at a starry night sky – amazing.

If you’re coming to Te Anau, definitely check out the glow worm caves.  One thing to bear in mind is that through winter there are fewer glow-worms.  Meaning, that the whole cave is not covered. But you will still see them, there is just not as many.  No photos are allowed during the glow worms part.
