Christchurch, New Zealand

After over 30 hours of travelling, I can’t tell you how happy I was to finally arrive at my first destination of this trip – Christchurch, New Zealand.  Christchurch is the largest city in the South Island of New Zealand.

I spent the day here exploring its sights.  My first stop was the Bridge of Remembrance, this is a memorial for those who lost their lives in the two world wars and the conflicts in Vietnam, Borneo, Korea and Malaya, the bridge and archway span over the Avon River.

My next stop was the Christchurch Botanic Gardens, such a lovely, relaxing beautiful place to walk around.  It is located in Hagley Park.

Hagley Park is also a great place to walk around or go for a run.  The cherry blossoms were in bloom and looked absolutely gorgeous.

Canterbury Earthquake National Memorial was unveiled in 2017.  This memorial pays respect to the 185 people who died as a result of the earthquake which took place on the 22nd February 2011.  Their names are engraved on the 100m-long memorial wall which curves along the south bank of the Avon.  It is called Oi Manawa which is Maori for ‘tremor or quivering of the heart’.

New Regent Street and Cathedral Square were also places I stopped at.
