Auckland

Our next stop on our adventure was Auckland – we, of course, couldn’t miss stopping at Hobbiton along the way!  Here we took a tour around the hobbit holes (there are quite a few).  We discovered some of the secrets of filming Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.  Even if you haven’t watched the movies you can still enjoy this great place.

After arriving in Auckland we spent the evening at Giapo’s ice cream.  Giapo has come up with some extremely interesting and delicious ways of enjoying ice-cream a little bit differently.  For instance, who would’ve thought ice cream in a Yorkshire pudding would be so delicious!  Or dipping your chips/fries into ice cream would be something you could enjoy.  Not only that but some of their creations as to what they can do with ice cream is incredible.  One tip if you’re going here for the Chef’s experience – don’t eat beforehand, you’ll be leaving with a full stomach!

Another thing to do in Auckland is to take a trip up the Sky Tower.  The observation deck here gives you great views of the city.  If you’re feeling brave there are the options of doing either the skywalk or a Bungy jump from the top.

We had a couple of days in Auckland, so we also went on a whale-watching trip as well.  I love whale watching and being able to see these magnificent creatures in the wild.  We were able to see some Orca’s which was great, they are one of my favourite animals, and one I never get sick of seeing in the wild.

On our last day in Auckland, we got the ferry to Waiheke Island and did the hop-on-hop-off bus.  This basically takes you around the island and stops at all the different vineyards and wineries.  One of the places we stopped at was Onetangi, and we went on a beach walk.  We stopped at Wild on Waiheke for lunch and a glass of wine which was delicious.  Another stop we took was at Cable Bay Winery, where we did some wine-tasting and took in the magnificent views it has there.
